                                                              Collins Canyon Water Development
                                                                         Collins Canyon, Canelo Hills
                                                                         Santa Cruz County, Arizona
                                                                                 2010 to Present

What:  Volunteers from the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation installed a drinker box, storage tank with collector bowl, and an exclosure fence in Collins Canyon of the Canelo Hills.
When:  Beginning 2010 and Continuing
Where:  Collins Canyon approximately 1 mile west of Parker Canyon Lake
General Information:  With the expanding Gould’s Turkey population in the Huachuca Mountains and Canelo Hills dependable water sources have become increasingly important.  To provide for this demand, volunteers from the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter installed a storage tank with water collection bowl on top and a drinker in Collins Canyon on June 11th and 12th, 2010.
The oversized bowl on top of the 2,000-gallon, fiberglass storage tank catches rainfall and snow throughout the year.  A 70 foot, buried HDPE pipe line connects the storage tank to a metal drinker box.  A 3-strand wire fence erected around the water development restricts use of the water to just wildlife.
Supplies were transported to the site 1 mile west of Parker Canyon Lake with ATVs.  Most of the volunteers hiked to the work site.
Volunteers from the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter inspect the catchment periodically throughout the year.
Gould’s Turkey are seen frequently around Parker Canyon Lake and in the nearby Canelo Hills.  Use by turkeys and other wildlife of the catchment is expected throughout the year.  In fact, a bear has enjoyed the development on several occasions!

Acknowledgements:  The Arizona Game and Fish Department and Coronado National Forest cooperated with the Chapter on the project.  Several Department personnel assisted during the work days, also.
