TURKEY HUNTERS CARE PROGRAM
Huachuca Gould’s Chapter
Cochise County, Arizona
November 20th, 2017

What: Once again, volunteers from the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation enriched Thanksgiving for communities in southern Cochise Country. This year the Chapter delivered 225 frozen turkeys to needy charities and individuals through the Turkey Hunters Care program. Funding came from the Arizona State Chapter and Huachuca Gould’s Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, a Walmart grant, and private donations.
When: The date was November 20th, 2017.
Where: Delivery locations included Benson, Douglas, Whetstone, Huachuca City, Fort Huachuca, and Sierra Vista, Arizona.
General Information: Volunteers from the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter delivered over 1½ tons of frozen turkeys to several locations in Cochise County. Recipients of the 225 birds included 10 cooperating charities and selected local families.
The Chapter’s effort is part of the nation-wide Turkey Hunters Care. This National Wild Turkey Federation program provides Thanksgiving turkeys to the needy through supporting, local organizations.
The day began early in the morning at the Walmart No. 3807 in Benson, where the sunrise temperature was in the low 40 degree range. The sky was mostly clear, adding to the crispness of the morning. The 225 birds, weighing 10 to 15 pounds each, were quickly loaded for their flight south. The Walmart crew deserves special thanks for their help.
With the birds loaded, the flock flew south and east for morning deliveries after a local stop at the Benson Food Bank. Ryan Catlett headed to Chiricahua Community Healthcare Centers in Sierra Vista, Elfrida and Douglas. Down Highway 90, birds were delivered to the Mustang Mountain Cowboy Church and Whetstone Fire Department.
Heading farther south to Sierra Vista birds were put to roost with 6 more service organizations that included Forgach House, Our Ladies of the Mountains Church, NETCOM Fort Huachuca, Hoop’s House, and Salvation Army. A final donation was made to selected local families.
For another year, Chapter Treasurer Wayne Kaiser did a tremendous job of purchasing the birds, securing donations and a grant, and coordinating with each charity the number of turkeys available. John Millican, Randy Keiller, Dave Inman, Rene Dube, Dave Winiesdorffer, Ryan Catlett, and Tom Deecken assisted Wayne on delivery day.
Thanks go to all the coordinators for the charities, also.
This year the Chapter received $2,2120.98 in donations. Special thanks go to each of the following donors for their support:
Rene and Inge Dube
Bob and Barbara Pourier

Randy and Laura Keiller

The Huachuca Gould’s Chapter for another year is heartened to make Thanksgiving Day that much better for deserving families in Cochise County.
