Huachuca Gould’s Chapter Hosts
2025 JAKES Day
for Area Youth!
For the 19th year, the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation offered local youth training in outdoor skills and ethics at the 2025 edition of JAKES Day. Twenty-four participants from 10 to 14 years of age attended the event held on June 7th at the Sierra Vista’s Soldier Creek Park. This was a family event with parents and siblings in attendance as well.
JAKES stands for Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship. The three stations available this year were fly fishing, land navigation, and BB gun shooting and safety.
Conducting the hands-on training stations were members of the San Pedro Flycasters and Huachuca Gould’s Chapter.
Fifty or so JAKES, family members, and volunteers enjoyed lunch at noon under a large, shade providing canopy, a welcome relief from the rather hot temperatures. On the menu were hamburgers and hotdogs with fixings, chips, watermelon, and refreshments.
Activities finished by the early afternoon.
Volunteers making this event a success deserve recognition. Representing the San Pedro Flycasters were Rick Weisberg, Pat Richards, Paul Hoyt, and Jim Yourgules. Wayne Kaiser and Dave Kemnitz of the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter deserve special recognition for organizing the event. Other members of the Chapter helping were John Millican, Steve Tritz, Jessica Vannoy, Tom Fuller, Wayne Kaiser, Tori Kemnitz, Jaheim Vinne, and Tom Deecken. Steve Hopkins with Southern Arizona Quail Forever assisted in meal preparation and serving as well. And finally, a big thank you goes to the parents that encouraged participation at JAKES Day.
For information on JAKES Day 2026 watch for an event announcement next spring on the Chapter’s website, http://www.nwtfhuagoulds.org.
