QUAIL FEST
Southern Arizona Quail Forever

Santa Cruz County Fairground ~ Sonoita, Santa Cruz County, Arizona
December 8th, 2019

What:  The Huachuca Gould’s Chapter recently participated in Quail Fest sponsored by the Southern Arizona Chapter of Quail Forever
When:  December 8th, 2019
Where:  Santa Cruz County Fairground located in Sonoita, Arizona.  The elevation was 4880 feet.
General Information:  The Southern Arizona Chapter of Quail Forever held its annual Quail Fest on December 8th, 2019 in Sonoita, Arizona.  This annual event offered local conservation- oriented organizations and businesses to interact with around 200 attendees.
The setting in the heart of the Sonoita Grassland boarded by the Santa Rita and Whetstone Mountains and Canelo Hills was very appropriate.  Gambel’s, Scaled, and Mearns Quail along with several other game species are found nearby in the varied habitats.
The following groups set up information and demonstration tables in the Pioneer Hall:
Cienega Watershed Partnership ~ Historic Empire Ranch
Arizona Slam Taxidermy ~ Borderlands Restoration
Arizona Game and Fish ~ Arizona Wildlife Federation
Quail Forever, Southern Arizona Chapter ~ Tucson Audubon Society
Mule Deer Foundation, Sierra Vista Chapter ~Huachuca Gould’s Chapter, National Wild Turkey Federation
Game Bird Taxidermy ~ Bureau of Land Management
Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge ~ Arizona Outdoor Adventure
Back Country Hunter and Anglers ~ Quail Diet Study
North American Versatile Hunting Dog ~ Arizona Antelope Foundation
At the Chapter table, information on turkey biology, organization activities and purpose, a PowerPoint presentation, and personal interaction with attendees were offered.
Huachuca Gould’s Chapter members participating in the event were John Millican, Joey and Tom Fuller, Randy Keiller, and Tom Deecken.
Locally, Quail Forever has been very active in research and habitat projects and retaining access to public lands, all activities supported by the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter.   The Chapter will be cooperating with Quail Forever in their upcoming Youth Hunt as well.  This event will be held on the nearby Las Cienegas National Conservation Area on February 29th.  For more information, refer to Quail Forever’s web site, http://www.saquailforever.com/youth-hunt/, as it becomes available.
