Sunnyside
Sunnyside Drinker Project
Sunnyside Canyon, Huachuca Mountains
Cochise County, Arizona
2011 to Present
What: With a grant from the National Wild Turkey Federation a fiberglass trough and storage tank were installed in Sunnyside Canyon in the Huachuca Mountains, Cochise County. Water from a nearby livestock water line will supply the tank.
When: 2011 and Continuing
Where: Sunnyside Canyon approximately 3 miles northeast of Parker Canyon Lake
General Information: Sunnyside Canyon and nearby Scotia Canyon in the Huachuca Mountains are home to core populations of Gould’s Turkey. Over the past 30 years birds have moved out of these canyons as well and now occupy several other locations in the Huachuca Mountains and Canelo Hills.
Dependable water outside of the canyon bottoms is limited to scattered stock tanks and troughs that are sometimes dry. To increase upland waters in Sunnyside Canyon, volunteers from the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter and Lone Mountain Ranch hands installed a fiberglass trough, HDPE 2,000-gallon storage, and connected both to a nearby livestock water line.
The National Wild Turkey Federation provided funds for the 2,000-gallon storage tank and fiberglass trough while the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter furnished the wildlife escape ramps for the trough. The Lone Mountain livestock permittee supplied the pipe and fittings as well as a backhoe for trenching. A specialized fusion machine to join sections of the HDPE pipe was on loan from the Coronado National Forest, also.
The project was completed on February 22nd, 2011. This water development is inspected at least annually by volunteers from the Chapter as well as personnel from the Lone Mountain Ranch.

Image Descriptions: The following images show personnel from the Lone Mountain Ranch and volunteers from the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter installing the drinker, storage tank, and connecting pipe.
