High school seniors who hunt offered $13,000 in scholarships
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (NOV. 26, 2022) — High school seniors who live in Cochise County and are active hunters are invited to apply for three scholarships offered through the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF). Submission deadline is Feb. 1, 2023. A potential total of $13,000 in scholarship funds is available if an applicant wins at local, state, and national level.
The scholarship opportunities are open to high school seniors (public, private, charter or home schooled), who plan to attend an institution of higher learning during the 2023/24 school year. This can be a junior, community or technical college, or a university.
After the local $1,000 scholarship winner is selected, that student’s application will be sent forward to compete for $2,000 at the Arizona state level. The winning application from Arizona will be sent to National Headquarters where the candidate will compete for a $10,000 scholarship. All scholarships will be awarded by the end of the 2022/23 school year.
Application for the local scholarship must be completed and submitted electronically not later than Feb. 1, 2023. Download one at https://your.nwtf.org/scholarships/. For more information, call 520-378-1563.
Scholarship applicants must actively participate in hunting, and support the conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of our hunting heritage. They must possess a valid hunting license and NWTF membership card. If not already members of the NWTF Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Education and
Sportsmanship (JAKES) Program, or NWTF adult program, scholarship applicants may apply for a membership online. Cost is $10 for those under 18, and $35 for those 18 and older. To join, go to www.nwtf.org.
Scholarship applicants are judged on their scholastic achievements, leadership abilities, community involvement, and demonstrated commitment to conservation.
The NWTF is a national nonprofit conservation organization that was founded in 1973 and has worked with wildlife agencies to restore wild turkey populations from 1.3 million wild turkeys to more than 7 million today. Now, NWTF’s volunteers raise funds and work daily to improve critical wildlife habitat, increase access to public hunting land and introduce new people to the outdoors and hunting. The NWTF is committed to tackling the challenges facing the sporting community through its “Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt.” initiative by conserving and enhancing 4 million acres of wildlife habitat, creating more than 1.5 million new hunters and opening at least 500,000 new acres to public hunting.
The $10,000 scholarship opportunity at National level is offered through the NWTF’s Dr. James Earl Kennamer Scholarship Program and is sponsored by Mossy Oak. To download an application, go to: https://your.nwtf.org/scholarships/.
The local Huachuca Gould’s Chapter of NWTF supports Cochise County. The Huachuca Gould’s website contains up-to-date information of all activities in which the organization is involved.
