ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY
Sierra Vista, Cochise County, Arizona
May 22nd, 2021
What and Where: Once again, the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation cleaned up a portion of Coronado Drive in Sierra Vista, Arizona. This effort is part of the City’s Adopt-A-Highway program.
When: May 22nd, 2021
General Information: Eight volunteers from the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter trolled Coronado Drive in Sierra Vista for trash and debris. This is the 11th year of Huachuca Gould’s participation in the City’s Adopt-A-Highway program.
The Chapter’s assigned area is an .8 of a mile portion of Coronado Drive that runs in front of the Sierra Vista City Hall and Police Department Headquarters. Signs in blue with white lettering stand at both ends of the street segment and recognize the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter and the National Wild Turkey Federation for this public service. This clean-up occurs twice a year.
After an 8:00 AM briefing in front of City Hall, the volunteers literally scattered out north and south to cover both sides of the street and all adjacent storm drainages. The weather cooperated except for the wind. It really was a wind by southeastern Arizona standards with gusts over 30 mph. Whatever did not get picked up is probably in the next county by now. Work was completed in a little over 2 hours.
Eight or so 30-gallon trash bags were filled. The bags and loose debris will be picked up by the City and hauled to the local land fill.
Wayne Kaiser and John Millican organized the volunteers and coordinated the project with personnel from the City of Sierra Vista. Assisting John in the clean-up were Dave Kemnitz, Tim Warne, Bri and Ryan Catlett and family, and Tom Deecken.
The next clean-up will be scheduled for the fall of 2021. Check the Chapter’s website in late October and early November for more information.
