Canelo Pass Wildlife Water Project
~
On November 17, 2012 the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter completed maintenance on a wildlife water development in the Canelo Hills. This development was built by the Arizona Game and Fish Department with funds provided by the State Big Game Special Tag Fund program. This program, also known as the Commissioners’ tag program, allows nonprofit State wildlife conservation organizations to raise funds for wildlife by selling specific big game species tags. Every dollar raised from the sale of each species tag goes directly to the management of that species and allows for a multitude of wildlife conservation projects.
The Canelo Hills water development was built by utilizing whitetail tag funds. Even though, this water catchment is not located in turkey habitat, a variety of other wildlife species depend on this yearlong water source. The Huachuca Gould’s Chapter is dedicated to providing and improving habitat for all wildlife, so when it was found that this wildlife guzzler was in need of repair, a group of dedicated volunteers answered the call. The day was spent repairing the development fence, repainting the fiberglass storage tank top, cleaning out the gutter and drinker, inspecting the apron, and weed-eating. The work session wrapped up with a warm lunch.
