Korn Canyon Drinker
Korn Ridge Water Development
Korn Canyon, Canelo Hills
Cochise County, Arizona
2004 to Present
What: Volunteers from the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation installed a drinker box, storage tank, and connecting HDPE pipe to an existing water line, and built an exclosure fence around the new development in the Korn Canyon drainage of the Canelo Hills.
When: Beginning 2004 and Continuing
Where: Korn Canyon approximately 4.5 miles north of Parker Canyon Lake
General Information: Lyle, Brushy, and Korn Canyons are used extensively by Gould’s Turkeys. Reliable water in these canyons is limited to scattered livestock tanks and troughs, seasonally wet portions of bottoms, and isolated springs.
To increase available water for all wildlife in the Korn Canyon drainage, volunteers from the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter on July 10th, 2004 installed a 1,200-gallon storage tank, metal drinker, and about ¼-mile of mostly above ground HDPE pipe to connect with an existing water line. Additionally, a 4-strand wire, 450 foot long fence was erected around the drinker and storage tank to restrict use to wildlife.
Volunteers from the Chapter check the catchment periodically throughout the year, especially during the annual spring Turkey Survey.
Acknowledgements: The Lindsey Family (livestock operators in Korn Canyon), The Arizona Game and Fish Department and Coronado National Forest cooperated with the Chapter on the project. The Lindsey Family maintains the water system that feeds the Korn wildlife water. The Lindseys loaned the Chapter their jackhammer for installing the fence as well.Image
Descriptions: The following images show volunteers from the Huachuca Gould’s Chapter installing the drinker, storage tank, pipe, and fence on July 10th, 2004 as well as on a maintenance check on March 3rd, 2006.
