High school seniors who support hunting offered national, local scholarships
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (JAN. 10, 2022) — High school seniors who support hunting are invited to apply for three potential scholarships offered through the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF). The deadline is on or before February 8, 2022. A potential total of $12,750 in scholarship funds is available.
The scholarship opportunities are open to high school seniors, (public, private, charter or home schooled), who plans to attend an institution of higher learning during the 2022/23 school year. This can be a junior college, community college, technical college, college or university.
After the local $750 scholarship winner is selected, that student’s application will be sent forward to compete for $2,000 at the Arizona state level. The winning application from Arizona will be sent to National Headquarters where the candidate will compete for a $10,000 scholarship. All scholarships will be awarded by the end of the 2021/22 school year.
Application for the local scholarship must be completed and submitted electronically on or before Feb. 8, 2022. Call 520-378-1563 for information.
Applicants for each scholarship must support the preservation of the hunting tradition, possess a valid hunting license and, if not already members of the NWTF JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Education and Sportsmanship) Program or adult program, they may apply for one online. Memberships are $10 for those under 18, and $35 for those 18 and older. To join, go to www.nwtf.org. Students are judged on their scholastic achievements, leadership abilities, community involvement and demonstrated commitment to conservation.
One of the two required letters of recommendation must come from a local NWTF member. The other must come from a school guidance counselor, educator, community leader, clergy member, or other professional who has worked closely with the applicant. Students residing in Cochise County can obtain a NWTF letter of recommendation by calling Joan Vasey, scholarship application chairwoman, at 520.378.1563 or [email protected]. In order to create the NWTF recommendation letter, scholarship applicants will need to participate in a brief interview for background information once all other portions of the scholarship application are complete.
The NWTF is a national nonprofit conservation organization that was founded in 1973 and has worked with wildlife agencies to restore wild turkey populations from 1.3 million wild turkeys to more than 7 million today. Now, NWTF’s volunteers raise funds and work daily to improve critical wildlife habitat, increase access to public hunting land and introduce new people to the outdoors and hunting. The NWTF is committed to tackling the challenges facing the sporting community through its “Save the Habitat. Save the Hunt.” initiative by conserving and enhancing 4 million acres of wildlife habitat, creating 1.5 million new hunters and opening 500,000 new acres to public hunting.
The $10,000 scholarship opportunity at National level is offered through the NWTF’s Dr. James Earl Kennamer Scholarship Program and is sponsored by Mossy Oak. To download an application, go to: https://your.nwtf.org/scholarships/.
