Subject: Kelly Spring Development
Group- this morning I visited the Chapter's Kelly Spring development in Hunter Canyon of the Huachuca Mountains.
I was pleased to find the drinker working properly and a full storage tank.
That was the good news.
There is a leak in the pipe at the storage tank. In the 2nd attached picture you will see a hose clamp securing HDPE pipe to a metal nipple or transition. The leak is at this point. I tightened the 2 hose clamps (one not visible) with a screw driver and slowed the leak somewhat.
Now on to the water source up canyon at the mine shaft. In picture 3, you can see that the water level in the mine has lowered to the outlet port and the collector tube is disconnected.
For the storage tank to be full and the pipe to be leaking means to me that water is still seeping out of the mine into the feeder line.
What to do?
I want to discuss the extent and timing of needed repairs at the next Board meeting, February 7th .
If there is anyone interested in doing the short-term necessary repairs before the Board meeting, let me know. I am available during the first part of next week.
Otherwise, we can wait until after the Board meeting. There is not an immediate urgency for the repairs as the storage tank is full and water is still trickling down the line from the mine shaft.
The short-term work would take about a half day. The walk in is about ¾ of a mile from the trailhead to the development. The slope is fairly gentle. I don't go fast anymore (maybe I did not ever go fast) and may stop enroute some.
We would be carrying a shovel, plumbing snake, pipe insulation and wrap, pipe wrenches, torch, and a limited number of fittings and hand tools. The objective would be to fix the pipe leak, re-insulate and possibly replace the pipe at the storage tank, snake the water line just below the mine shaft, and re-connect the collector tube. Flushing the entire water line would have to wait until the spring source has filled.
It was a nice morning otherwise.
